Published on September 22, 2019, a proposal to rename a road in Nairobi's South B area after the late Kenyan football legend Joe Kadenge is gaining momentum.

The late Kadenge lived in Mariakani Estate in South B until his death at Meridian Hospital in Nairobi on July 7, 2019, at the age of 84 after a long battle with stroke.

Majority Whip and South B MCA Ms Chege Waithera has tabled a notice of motion at the County Assembly calling for the renaming of Kipiti Crescent Road to Joe Kadenge Crescent Road in honour of the late football icon.

Ms Waithera argued that renaming the road after Kadenge would be a fitting tribute to his legacy, citing the county government's history of naming roads after heroes and heroines who have contributed to the country's development.

"... the country has since independence named and renamed roads to honour heroes and heroines who have contributed immensely to the development of the republic," she said.

The proposal comes after the Senate had also suggested renaming Nyayo National Stadium after the Kenyan football icon.

Several notable Kenyans have been immortalised by having roads in Nairobi named after them, including Nobel laureate Prof Wangari Maathai and Cardinal Moses Otunga.
