On Saturday night, a money dealer in Nairobi's Eastleigh area was robbed of Sh15 million as he attempted to help a politician change old Sh1,000 banknotes to US dollars.
The victim, who runs a forex exchange bureau, was approached by a man who claimed a politician had Sh15 million in old currency and wanted it exchanged at a good rate.
The money dealer packed 150,000 US dollars and took a car provided by the broker, but was threatened and robbed of the cash in the Upperhill area.
The Nairobi Police boss, Philip Ndolo, confirmed that his team is investigating the incident.
Meanwhile, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Noordin Haji, has directed the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and police to preserve the monetary value of old Sh1,000 notes held as exhibits in court.
As of September 12, 2019, the agencies were instructed to file reports on pending cases involving old Sh1,000 banknotes by September 30, 2019, to facilitate demonetisation.
Approximately Sh50 million is held as exhibits by the two agencies, and those handling the old banknotes are required to photocopy the leaves before handing them over to banks for demonetization.
