Teachers in Kisii County are gearing up for the inaugural Kenyenya Sports Extravaganza, set to take place at the Kenyenya Green Stadium next weekend.
According to the event's coordinator, Walter Ontweka, over 500 teachers drawn from across the county will compete in various disciplines, including soccer, tug of war, volleyball, draughts, chess, scrabble, table tennis, ajua, and badminton.
Ontweka revealed that indoor games will be held at Kenyenya Secondary School, with basketball being excluded from the event.
"We expect a highly successful event. We have learnt lessons from the two Gucha Teachers Sports Extravaganza editions and we want to make the event better," Ontweka said.
The event aims to bring teachers together to bond, socialise, and interact, according to Ontweka.
Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers Kisii Branch chairman Laban Bosire encouraged teachers to participate in such events, citing the benefits of socialising and bonding.
As reported by The Standard, the Kenya Rugby Union will continue to support the events, with Bosire, who is also the regional development officer in charge of Nyanza region, confirming the union's commitment.
Earlier this month, teachers gathered at Tendere Secondary School for the second edition of the Gucha Teachers Sports Extravaganza, where Diaspora Combined edged Gucha Combined 2-0 to win the soccer title.
