On September 22, 2019, Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko spoke out against the ongoing investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) into irregular garbage collection tenders.

According to Sonko, the investigations are a 'witch-hunt' aimed at destroying his political ambitions. He claimed his detractors were using the investigations to discredit his leadership.

During World Clean Up Day in Ruai, Sonko stated he is ready to step aside to allow for proper investigations if necessary.

'All these are lies…I will fight my own personal problems as Sonko,' he said.

As part of the investigations, Sonko has already recorded 13 statements at EACC involving 13 companies awarded garbage collection tenders.

He emphasized his respect for investigative agencies and his willingness to cooperate, stating, 'We must respect investigative agencies like the DCI, DPP and EACC…and I am ready…I do not fear jail.'
