On Sunday, a tragic incident occurred in Lamu West, Kenya, where a pedestrian, Mwangi wa Dorcas, 38, was hit by a speeding Administration Police vehicle near Subira Guest House in Hindi town.
Mwangi, who was also a boda boda rider, succumbed to head and chest injuries he sustained in the accident. He died while receiving treatment at the King Fahad County Hospital.
Residents and boda boda operators have accused the police driver of reckless driving, sparking calls for action against the officer.
"How can a police vehicle hit a civilian and flee? We expected the driver to stop and even assist in rushing the victim to hospital," said Mr John Mbugua, a boda boda operator at Hindi.
Issack Yunus, Haki Africa Coordinator, Lamu Branch, has vowed to ensure justice is done, stating, "This is double tragedy to the family of (Mr) Mwangi who lost his wife in a road accident about a year ago. We will ensure action is taken against the driver,"
Lamu County Police Commander Muchangi Kioi confirmed that the police driver had been arrested and would be arraigned on Monday to face charges of murder and careless driving.
Mr Kioi dismissed allegations that the driver was drunk or new on the road, stating that it was a normal accident and calling on residents to stop spreading malicious rumours.
