On September 22, 2019, a disturbing incident shook the community in Busia, where a form one student from Butula sub-county was found raped and drugged, five days after being reported missing.

The student was discovered abandoned near River Bujumba by unknown individuals, leaving behind a trail of concern and outrage.

According to Bumala Police Station officers, two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident and are currently in custody, assisting with investigations before they are arraigned in court.

The student's mother also reported that the wife of one of the suspects attempted to bribe her with Sh10,000 to settle the matter out of court, further highlighting the need for justice and accountability.

According to Mary Makokha, the director of Rural Education and Economic Enhancement Program (REEP), an NGO responsible for the rescue of abused children, rape cases have increased in the area in recent days.

Ms. Makokha noted that the alarming trend of rape cases, with 13,624 reported cases, has not been adequately addressed by local leaders, and that Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), including HIV, are also on the rise among the youth in the area.

She attributed the rise in STDs to the numerous night clubs in the town, which she believes are contributing to the spread of the diseases.
