Published on September 22, 2019, a dispute over a three-mile-long river strip separating Garissa and Tana River counties has escalated.

The area, which serves as a water source and pasture, has been a point of contention between the two counties for years.

Recently, Tana River County constructed ward administration offices, early child development classrooms, and health centers in areas claimed by both Garissa and Tana River counties.

Garissa deputy county secretary Abdirashid Mohamed expressed concern over the motives behind Tana River County's move, warning that it could lead to a break in the fragile peace between the two communities.

Meanwhile, Interior CS Fred Matiang'i has been urged to take action against leaders from Isiolo County who are allegedly behind periodic tensions along the Garissa-Isiolo border, which have resulted in the loss of 20 lives over the past two years.
