Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's troubles have escalated with two of his drivers facing charges for obstructing President Uhuru Kenyatta's motorcade on August 29, 2019, along Mombasa Road in Nairobi.

The incident occurred as President Kenyatta's motorcade made its way to State House from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) after he landed from Tokyo, Japan, where he had attended the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (Ticad).

The two drivers, Antony Wangamba and Joseph Njue, were driving vehicles without number plates and were arrested on August 29. They appeared before Principal Magistrate Martha Nanzushi of the Nairobi Traffic Court and denied the charges.

Mr. Wangamba was released on a bond of Sh50,000, while Mr. Njue was freed after parting with Sh100,000. The hearing of their cases has been set for separate dates in November.

The arrest and prosecution of the two drivers is one of the many woes facing Mr. Sonko, who is fighting accusations of unprocedurally issuing garbage collection tenders and is being investigated by the Kenya Revenue Authority over tax evasion claims.
