On July 7, 2015, the life of Austin Jack Dianga, a 17-year-old student at Consolata School, came to a tragic end. His mother, Mrs. Ruth Dianga, recalls the day vividly, receiving incessant calls from the school enquiring about her whereabouts. The school principal, Fr. Karoli Ouma, told her that her son had had an 'accident' and needed her to rush to MP Shah Hospital.
However, the class teacher, Mary Magotsi, had already informed Mrs. Dianga that her son was pushed by a classmate. The couple's son had been admitted to a national school in Kisii, but they had sought a slot in Nairobi to monitor his medical condition. They chose Consolata School, a Catholic institution, thinking it would be a safe haven for their child.
But the school's actions on that fateful day would leave the family with more questions than answers. The school and witnesses initially stated that Austin had been pushed, but later recanted their statements, claiming he had fallen from the first floor. The father of the boy accused of pushing Austin even visited the hospital to check on him.
Four years on, the family is still seeking justice. Mrs. Dianga remembers her son's words during the holiday, about a boy named Mark who had refused to return his Geography book. She suspects that the tiff started over the textbook. The mother of the accused never visited to apologize or condole with the family, leaving them with more unanswered questions.
As the family continues to seek closure, they call on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to unravel the mystery surrounding Austin's death. They have confidence in the current DCI and hope that the truth will finally come to light.
