On August 30, 2019, the inaugural Avena Kitui Half Marathon took place in Kitui, attracting top athletes from the region.
Nancy Jelagat from Eldoret took the women's title with a time of 70:48.8, followed closely by Vane Nyamboke from Eldoret with 73:05.4 and Agnes Mumbua from Machakos with 74:06.2.
Stephen Mwendwa from Machakos dominated the men's category with a time of 61:19.0, beating Ronald Kirui from Kiringet with 61:28.8 and Bernard Musau from Machakos with 61:31.3.
Janet Nyiva won the women's 8km event in 29:29.0, while Pius Mwangangi emerged as the best in the men's 8km with a time of 25:57.1.
At the girls' 6km event, Jedidah Kambua took the top spot with 24:25.1, followed by Sikuku David with 25:04.5 and Katuku David with 25:14.8.
Ndunda Kithikii ruled the boys' 6km event with 22:46.0, beating Mwanthi Muthama with 22:46.3 and Mola Kimani with 23:43.9.
Kitui Senator Enock Wambua, the event patron, expressed his delight over the success of the inaugural event.
"I am grateful to God, to sponsors and participating athletes that the inaugural Kitui-Avena Half Marathon was a resounding success," he said.
The event was sponsored by Avena, Golden Africa, Communications Authority, Sports Kenya, Mulleys Supermarket - Kitui Branch, Naivas Supermarket - Kitui Branch, Sinohydro Construction Company, and Parkside Hotel – Kitui.
