On September 21, 2019, a man in Nairobi found himself in trouble with the law after withdrawing money sent to him by mistake through M-Pesa.

Stanley Irungu, a customer of Millicent Atieno's M-Pesa shop in Umoja, was mistakenly sent Sh60,000 by Atieno, who had been given the money by a customer to deposit in Irungu's number.

Irungu allegedly withdrew Sh39,000 from the Sh60,000, leaving Sh21,000 remaining in his M-Pesa account.

Atieno reported the matter to the police after Irungu's phone went unanswered when she tried to ring him.

At the Makadara Law Courts, Irungu was charged with theft and released on Sh20,000 bail after admitting to withdrawing the money but promising to refund.

The case will be mentioned on October 1, 2019.
