Published on September 21, 2019, the government has set aside Sh5.8 billion for the establishment of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system on Thika Highway.
The project, undertaken by the Kenya National Highways Authority (Kenha), is one of the five proposed BRT System corridors in Nairobi.
Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia revealed that the funds will be used to construct stations, four foot bridges, a park, and ride facility.
"The design infrastructure is going on under Kenha which has estimated the cost to be Sh5.8 billion," CS Macharia said when he appeared before the National Assembly Committee on Transport.
High-capacity BRT buses will be sourced from South Africa and local assemblers, with the government aiming to reduce travel time and cost by up to 70 percent.
The BRT system is part of the government's plan to improve public transport in Nairobi, with six corridors planned, including the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Likoni route.
