Financing is a major hurdle for many entrepreneurs in Kenya with innovative business ideas. The country's lack of home-grown venture capitalists and angel investors willing to take risks has created a gap that global venture capitalists are filling, often by acquiring controlling equity in promising companies.

Published on September 20, 2019, a venture capitalist invests in start-ups or companies using pooled money, while an angel investor uses their own funds to support new ventures. Both provide not only funding but also guidance to help start-ups grow into successful companies.

For any economy to succeed, new ventures are essential, driving innovation and increased productivity. Venture capitalists, with their significant financial resources, play a vital role in the economies they operate in.

The United States and China are leaders in innovation, thanks in part to their venture capitalists and angel investors who fund start-ups and transform them into multinational corporations.

Unlike traditional investors, venture capitalists focus on predicting the unexpected and taking calculated risks. They seek opportunities that can deliver high returns if enabled, looking for strong management teams, large potential markets, and unique products or services with a competitive advantage.

Many successful businesses, including Twitter, Microsoft, Google, Apple, and Facebook, have benefited from venture capital involvement. To address macroeconomic problems like unemployment, low savings, and low investment, the government should encourage the growth of venture capital by creating a more conducive business environment.
