On September 20, 2019, a daring escape was reported from Kericho Medium Prison. Geoffrey Kiprotich, a prisoner serving a five-year sentence for malicious damage to property, managed to slip away from the prison's warders.

According to sources, Kiprotich was among a group of prisoners mobilized to pluck tea at the prison's farm in the outskirts of Kericho town. The officer in charge of the prison, Senior Superintendent of Prisons (SSP) Shadrach Kinoti, could neither confirm nor deny the incident when contacted.

"Tell whoever gave you my number to give you the full details. I am in another function right now," Kinoti said before hanging up.

Prison wardens were seen searching possible hideouts around the tea plantation and its neighborhood. It is alleged that Kiprotich comes from Nandi county and had been recently transferred to Kericho from Kapsabet prison.
