On September 8, 2019, Kevin Otieno, a 17-year-old Form Three student from Sirandu Village in Gem Sub-county, was sent home by Barding Boys Secondary School to collect outstanding school fees.
According to his grandmother, Rosalia Nyasigunga, Otieno's brother had sent him Sh3,000 to settle the arrears, but the boy felt it was insufficient, given his remaining balance of Sh8,087.
"He went silent for a while after speaking to his brother and later left the house quietly. He appeared disappointed. He never returned home," Nyasigunga said.
Deputy Principal David Onyango confirmed that Otieno was a student of the school and had been sent home to collect school fees.
