On Monday, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) raided a residential area in Riara, Nairobi, where they discovered a gold smelting center.

According to DCI George Kinoti, the center was being used to melt metal with insignificant gold content into ingots, which were then used to lure unsuspecting businessmen.

The tenant of the house, Abdul Rashid, escaped after getting wind of the impending raid.

DCI Kinoti revealed that they have solid leads on suspects involved in the fake gold racket in Kilimani, including influential businessmen, lawyers, and judicial officers.

He also alleged that the suspects have been enjoying protection from some corrupt senior police officers and government officials, as well as officials at the Kenya Airports Authority and the Immigration Department.

Investigations have revealed an intricate cartel operating within the leafy suburbs of Kilimani, Kileleshwa, and Lavington.
