On September 20, 2019, a violent confrontation erupted in Cheptalal, Konoin, Bomet County, leaving two assistant chiefs in critical condition.

Assistant Chiefs Philip Chelule and Joel Mutai were part of a team of four officials who raided a suspected illicit brew den at Kitala village.

According to Bomet County Commissioner Geoffrey Omonding, the group arrested two suspects before residents ambushed them, freeing the suspects and leaving the chiefs injured.

Chelule sustained a deep cut on his head and elbow, while Mutai suffered bruises and a swollen forehead.

Residents of Cheptalal location have a reputation for engaging in illicit brew sales, with a previous incident involving over 200 liters of illicit brew just two months prior.
