On September 20, 2019, Japan made history by defeating Russia 30-10 in the opening match of the Rugby World Cup, held in Tokyo. The win sent fans into a frenzy as they celebrated the Brave Blossoms' triumphant start to the tournament.

Among the enthusiastic crowd was Kasumi Takizawa, a 25-year-old rugby fan who had been eagerly awaiting the World Cup. "I have been so looking forward to the World Cup. It's like a once-in-a-lifetime event," she exclaimed.

For Takizawa, who has tickets to an Argentina match during the tournament, the public viewing was a chance to experience the excitement of the World Cup with fellow fans. "I hope to see more people become rugby fans so that I can share excitement with them," she said.

Long-time fan Yasuhiro Inokuchi was also thrilled with the win, describing it as "a wonderful win!" However, he remained cautious in his expectations, hoping for a spot in the final eight. "I wish I could say Japan will win it all, but realistically I'm hoping for the final eight," he said.

The World Cup, held outside the sport's traditional strongholds for the first time, aims to expand rugby's fanbase. Among the new converts was 54-year-old Hirohide Kawase, who was inspired by Japan's historic upset against South Africa in the 2015 World Cup. "I remember Japan's impressive win... I want the team to reach the very top," he said.

As the tournament continues, fans from around the world, including 29-year-old Hayley Beaton from Ireland, have flown into Japan to cheer on their teams. "We're very excited about the World Cup!" Beaton exclaimed, who has secured tickets to three Ireland fixtures during the tournament.
