On September 20, 2019, a case of mistaken MPesa transfer made headlines in Nairobi.

Stanley Irungu, a Nairobi resident, was arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts and charged with theft after he allegedly withdrew Ksh. 39,000 that was sent to his MPesa account by mistake.

According to the charge sheet, the money was the property of Milicent Atieno, who had mistakenly sent the funds to Irungu's phone number.

The incident is alleged to have taken place on June 22, 2019, at Umoja estate in Nairobi.

Atieno claimed that when she called Safaricom to help her reverse the money, they told her that Irungu only had a balance of Ksh. 21,000.

Irungu was released on Ksh. 20,000 cash bail after admitting that he withdrew the money but was willing to refund it.

The case will be mentioned on October 1, 2019.
