On August 26, 2019, at 3 am, Inspekta Mwala was driving a car with registration KCV 807C on Kaloleni Road towards Mazeras when he attempted to overtake another vehicle and ended up hitting Ismael Mangi, who was walking on the road, killing him instantly.
After a lengthy trial, Mwala was found guilty of causing Mangi's death and was sentenced to either pay a fine of KSh 30,000 or serve a one-year prison term. He chose to pay the fine, which he did, and was subsequently released from custody.
Speaking to K24 TV after his release, Mwala expressed his gratitude and said, "I am now on my way back to Nairobi after attending court sessions and paying the fine as ordered by the judge."
During the sentencing, the judge, Nelly C. Adalo, acknowledged Mwala's remorse and apology to Mangi's family, stating that he had taken responsibility for his actions and had shown remorse.
However, Mangi's family has vowed to take Mwala to court again to seek compensation for their loss.
