On September 20, 2019, African Union (AU) envoy Raila Odinga spoke out against xenophobic attacks in South Africa, calling them 'very shameful.'
Speaking at the 42nd General Council of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU), Mr. Odinga, the AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development, urged the South African government to condemn and stop the attacks.
“Let the leaders walk the talk by taking stern action against those perpetrating these shameful acts,” he said.
Mr. Odinga emphasized that the attacks undermine the progress made in uniting African countries and require immediate attention.
He also highlighted the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to drive intra-Africa trade and develop the continent's infrastructure.
As an 'Afro-optimist,' Raila Odinga encouraged countries to invest in the continent's infrastructure projects to boost trade and growth.
Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) boss Francis Atwoli praised Raila Odinga, describing him as one of the best organisers he has met.
