On the eve of the Rugby World Cup opener against Japan, Russia's team is determined to prove their worth and make a statement. The match, scheduled for Friday, marks Russia's first appearance in the tournament since 2011.
Despite being heavy underdogs, Russia is hopeful that their physical strength will be the key to upsetting the hosts. Led by Welsh coach Lyn Jones, the team has been working tirelessly to perfect their contact and forward play.
“Obviously, we are more physical and more aggressive than we were in November,” said assistant coach Alexander Voytov, highlighting the team's focus on physical strengths such as speed and strength in the scrum and ruck.
Prop Valery Morozov is also determined to prove the Russians deserve their place at the top table. “In terms of tomorrow’s match, which is so important, so we need to show we deserve to be in this match and we want to deliver on all of our hard work in training,” he said.
Japan, known for their dynamic attacking style, will be looking to spread the ball wide and exploit Russia's weaknesses. However, the Russians are confident that their physical approach will be the key to spoiling the party.
