On June 22, 2019, Stanely Irungu received Ksh. 60,000 in his M-pesa account, mistakenly sent by businesswoman Milicent Atieno who operates an M-Pesa shop at Umoja in Nairobi county.
Atieno had been given the money by a customer to deposit in her number, but she mistakenly sent it to Irungu's account instead.
Irungu, who was also a customer of Atieno's, ignored her calls when she tried to reach him to return the money.
After the complainant took up the matter with the police, Irungu was tracked down and apprehended.
Appearing before the Makadara Senior Principal Magistrate, Angelo Kithinji, Irungu confessed to receiving the money and withdrawing some of it.
He was released on Ksh. 20,000 bail and the case was set to be mentioned on October 1, 2019.
