On September 19, 2019, DCI detectives made a significant breakthrough in the fight against counterfeit food products in Nairobi.

Three suspects, Abdikafi Ahmed, Abdirizack Ahmed, and Liban Ahmed Abdille, were arrested in the Kamukunji area for repackaging expired rice, which was set to be distributed to unsuspecting consumers.

According to an official tweet by DCI Kenya, the detectives recovered 1500 bags of rice, each weighing approximately 50kgs, and a lorry believed to be used in distributing the toxic food items.

The raid comes amid a growing concern over the authenticity of edible products in the Kenyan market, with many consumers questioning the safety of their food.

As reported by NTV four months prior, the market is feared to be plagued by counterfeits, including fake eggs and painkillers, which could be fatal to one's health and wellness.

Naivas Supermarket was previously exposed for using excessive preservatives to keep their meat fresh for distribution.
