On September 18, 2019, the Kenyan government intervened in a unique case involving two women who had mutually swapped their husbands in search of happiness and peace of mind.

The women, Lilian Weta and Immaculate Wekesa, had exchanged husbands with their partners, Christopher Abwire and Kevin Barasa, respectively, in a bid to find happiness and peace of mind.

However, the arrangement raised concerns about the welfare of the children involved, prompting the government to step in and ensure their safety.

Busia County Commissioner Jacob Narengo and Children Services Director Esther Wasige witnessed a joint parenting agreement signed by the couples at a Busia hotel.

According to Wasige, the children were still young and needed to be protected from potential harm, hence the agreement that the mothers should stay with them until they are adults.

"The children are below 10 years, so we have agreed that the mothers should stay with them until they are adults," Wasige said.

Wasige also emphasized that the agreement was legally binding and could be amended if the need arises, adding that any party that disobeys the agreement would be sued for neglecting their children.

Abwire and Barasa, the new husbands, have pledged to take care of the children and ensure they receive proper education, clothing, and medical care.
