On September 19, 2019, the Kenyan government announced plans to construct a high-capacity bus lane along Thika Road, a major highway in Nairobi, at a cost of Sh5.8 billion.
The project, overseen by the Kenya National Highways Authority (Kenha), aims to ease traffic congestion in the city and is part of the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) System corridors in Nairobi.
Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia told Parliament that the design will include a station, four-foot bridges, and a park and ride facility.
"The design infrastructure is going on under Kenha which has estimated the cost to be Sh5.8 billion," Mr. Macharia said.
The four-foot bridges under construction on Thika Road are designed as modules for ease of modifications to accommodate BRT services.
Additionally, the development of a park and ride facility has been proposed at Kasarani stadium to be integrated with commuter rail services.
The announcement comes at a time when the government is gearing up to receive the first batch of high-capacity buses for implementing the pilot of BRT along the Thika Superhighway.
