On the campaign trail for the Kibra by-election, an unlikely friendship blossomed between Jubilee's McDonald Mariga and Orange Democratic Movement's Imran Okoth.

Despite being from different political parties, the two candidates put aside their differences and engaged in a cordial conversation, leaving many Kenyans in awe.

As reported by Tuko on September 19, 2019, Governor of Kirinyaga Anne Waiguru praised the two candidates for their display of unity and called on them to continue working together.

Waiguru noted that despite their parties' differences, they both believe in the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and its success.

However, the Jubilee party's decision to field Mariga as their candidate has been met with criticism from some of its members, who claim that the party's leadership did not consult them before making the decision.

MPs Babu Owino and Millie Odhiambo have come out to express their disappointment with the party's leadership, stating that they were not consulted before Mariga was chosen as the party's candidate.
