Global Trustworthiness: Scientists Top the List

Published on September 19, 2019, a new international survey conducted by Ipsos MORI, a UK market research company, has shed light on the most and least trusted professions across the world.

According to the survey, scientists are regarded as the most trusted professionals globally, with 60% of the public considering them trustworthy. This is a significant finding, as it contradicts the notion that experts are no longer trusted.

Doctors and teachers follow closely, with 56% and 52% of the public trusting them respectively. These professions are essential in building trust, particularly in healthcare and education.

On the other hand, politicians are the least trusted group, with only 9% of the public considering them trustworthy. This is not surprising, given the often-negative perception of politicians in the media.

Here are the top 5 most and least trusted professions globally:

  • Scientists - 60%
  • Doctors - 56%
  • Teachers - 52%
  • Government ministers - 12%
  • Politicians - 9%

It is worth noting that trust is not in a crisis, as suggested by some experts. In fact, many professions have high levels of trust, and scientists are held in high esteem globally.

Ben Page, CEO of Ipsos MORI, commented on the survey, saying: "It has been said that we no longer trust experts. This study shows that in fact, scientists are held in high esteem all over the world. Many professions have high levels of trust. As our new report, Trust: the truth shows, trust is not in a new acute crisis."
