From Actor to Director: Nick Mutuma's Journey

Published on September 19, 2019

Kenyan actor Nick Mutuma has made a bold move into directing with his first film, You Again, a romantic comedy that delves into the intricacies of working with an ex. The film, which stars Mutuma alongside Tanzania's Mimi Mars, Lenana Kariba, and Neomi Ng'ang'a, is set to premiere at the Junction Mall on Thursday, September 26.

According to Mutuma, the idea for You Again was born over coffee with his friend Natasha Likimani, an accomplished writer. The two had always toyed with the idea of collaborating on a project, and after fleshing out a few ideas over several weeks, You Again came to life. The film was shot in just seven days.

One of the key decisions Mutuma made was to cast Mimi Mars from Tanzania. He explained that he had always championed Pan-African collaborations, believing that Africa has the potential to build the largest music and film industry in the world. Mutuma reached out to Vanessa Mdee, who recommended Mimi Mars for the role. The decision paid off, with Mimi bringing a poise and grace to her character that was reminiscent of her real-life mother, Sophia.

As an actor who has been in the industry for quite some time, Mutuma found the transition to directing to be far from easy. However, he enjoyed the journey every step of the way, crediting his friend Roy Mutonga for helping him find his footing in the production space. Mutuma also expressed his gratitude to Tosh Gitonga, who directed him in the 2018 rom-com Disconnect, for his guidance and support.

When asked about the most challenging aspect of starring in his own production, Mutuma acknowledged that acting and directing can be a difficult combination, especially when learning as you go. However, he credited his co-director Natasha and cinematographer Kevin Davies for helping him find a rhythm and build a cohesive vision for the film.

Financing the film was another significant challenge, but Mutuma was able to secure support from Darling Hair Kenya, Film Studios, and Switch TV. The film's locations were generously provided by Funscapes Amusement Park, Ashleys, Café Kaya, and Five Senses Restaurant, while the wardrobe was sourced from Royalty By Rajab and Signature The Brand clothing.

Ultimately, Mutuma hopes that You Again will showcase the beauty of Kenya and Africa, dispelling the negative narratives that often portray the continent as poverty-stricken and sad. He also expressed his desire to create exportable Kenyan and African stories that will resonate with audiences worldwide.
