On September 19, 2019, a significant development took place in the Kibra by-election as former Starehe MP Maina Kamanda publicly endorsed Bernard Otieno Okoth alias Imran as his preferred candidate.
As a member of the Jubilee party, Kamanda's endorsement may come as a surprise to many, but he clarified that he is supporting Imran Okoth as an individual, not as a member of the Jubilee party.
‘We have fielded a candidate as Jubilee party, as a person I will be with ODM nominee… he is the handshake nominee,’ Kamanda said, as ODM leader Raila Odinga looked on.
Imran Okoth will face 24 other candidates, including Jubilee’s McDonald Mariga, in the by-election slated for November 7.
The Kibra MP seat fell vacant following the death of Ken Okoth, who succumbed to colorectal cancer on July 26 this year.
