Published on September 19, 2019, the Airports Council International (ACI) World Airport Traffic Report revealed that Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has been ranked as the second fastest growing airport in the world for air cargo.
According to the report, JKIA handled over 342,000 metric tons of air cargo in 2018, marking a 25% growth from 2017. This impressive growth has seen JKIA leapfrog to the second position in the 'Fastest Growing Airports' category.
JKIA's growth can be attributed to a substantial increase in air cargo traffic to and from Europe, Asia, America, as well as recent additions of China and Australia. The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has also credited the airport's transformation in air cargo management and the participation of public and private sectors for its improvement in global standing.
The construction of several modern transit sheds at JKIA has seen the airport's overall cargo grow to 1.2 million tons annually. This growth has positioned JKIA as the premier cargo distribution center for online commerce companies in the region.
JKIA's CEO, Jonny Anderson, said, 'This is an exciting time for Kenya, the face of cargo is changing, and we are positioning JKIA as the premier cargo distribution center for online commerce companies in the region.'
Other top airports in total cargo volumes include Hong Kong International Airport, Memphis International Airport, Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Incheon International Airport, and Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.
