On September 19, 2019, a planned strike by British Airways pilots was averted, allowing for negotiations between the airline and the British Airline Pilots' Association (BALPA) to proceed.

The pilots had been at odds with the airline over pay rise demands, with the airline offering an 11.5% salary increase over three years, compared to the pilots' demand for 11.9%.

The airline's offer was based on its operating profit of nearly £2 billion ($2.5 billion) for 2018, an 11.6% increase over the previous year.

Although the strike was called off, the airline had already cancelled passengers' flights scheduled for September 27, with some passengers already refunded or re-booked to other flights.

Earlier this month, the pilots' first-ever strike resulted in the cancellation of about 1,700 services, affecting nearly 200,000 passengers.

British Airways, listed on the London Stock Exchange, is the flag carrier airline of the United Kingdom and the second-largest airline in the country, based on fleet size and passengers carried.
