Construction work at the ultra-modern Dandora Stadium in Nairobi has come to a halt, with the contractor refusing to continue working until he receives payment for the work already done.
According to multiple sources, the contractor has stopped working on the site located in Eastlands for the past week, citing unpaid bills.
Project manager Steve Ragos described the situation as 'sad news', saying that 90% of the work had been completed, but the contractor was now demanding payment before finishing the project.
‘Sad news at Dandora ultra-modern stadium. No more work going on as the contractor has parked his tools before completion of the work,’ Ragos said.
The project manager fears that the delay may push back the completion date, which was initially set for April.
The stadium, which is expected to be the first of its kind in East Africa to display electronic advertising boards, has already seen significant progress, with 3000 seats fitted and facilities such as reception offices, dressing rooms, and CCTV cameras installed.
A delegation from football's continental body Caf is expected to inspect the facility in October.
