On September 17, 2019, a group of politicians attempted to register the Tangatanga Movement and The Tanga Tanga Movement as political parties with the Registrar of Political Parties, Ann Nderitu.
However, Nderitu rejected the application, stating that the names did not meet the constitutional requirements.
"... the name has not met the requirements of section 91 of the Constitution of Kenya. Please consider other names," Nderitu said.
The group, which has not publicly identified itself, was reportedly seeking to register the name on behalf of Deputy President William Ruto, who is associated with the Tangatanga faction within Jubilee Party.
Some social media users were surprised by the news that the group had attempted to register the name as a political party and use it as a joke.
The name originated from a statement by President Uhuru Kenyatta that his deputy spends weekends 'tangatanga'ing around the country.
