On September 19, 2019, Kenya's National Treasury announced a 2.1% cut to the government's planned spending for the 2019/20 fiscal year, amounting to Sh46.2 billion.
The decision was made by Acting Finance Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani, who took over the role in July 2019. Yattani promised to implement strict spending cuts, focusing on non-essential items such as foreign travel by officials.
The budget cuts were primarily caused by revenue collection shortfalls, according to the ministry. The Treasury achieved the reductions through 'trade-offs and reallocations of the existing budgetary provisions.'
Former Finance Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich faced criticism for increasing spending in June and imposing additional tax measures on taxpayers.
