Published on September 19, 2019, a video of a school kid using vulgar language went viral on social media, sparking conversations about who is to blame for the young boy's outburst.
Parents complained that some books they were told to buy for their children contained vulgar language, including 'Blood Ties', a storybook that teaches children about adult content.
The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) distanced themselves from the book, stating that it is not among the books they recommended for schools.
“This book is not approved by KICD. It is not listed in the Orange book that contains a list of all books that schools should use for teaching and learning,” said KICD in a tweet.
Storymoja, the publisher of the storybook, also responded to the complaints, stating that the book guides readers on how to handle sensitive situations and underscores the importance of treating victims of sexual abuse with sensitivity.
Despite KICD's denial of recommending the book, parents expressed anger on social media, claiming that teachers suggested the book to them, which contains vulgar language.
