On September 19, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta sent a message of condolence to the family of former Lang'ata Member of Parliament Mwangi Mathai, who had passed away in a Nairobi hospital.

Mwangi Mathai was a bold, brave, and astute leader, according to the President's message. He will be remembered for his entrepreneurial spirit, which created jobs and employment opportunities for many Kenyans through his businesses.

The President noted that Mwangi Mathai's efforts to empower Kenyans through his business ventures and his book, 'Beyond Poverty and Vulnerability in Kenya', would be forever appreciated.

Mathai was also a consummate motivational writer and the former husband of Nobel laureate Prof Wangari Mathai. The couple got married in 1969 and had three children before their divorce in 1979.

President Kenyatta prayed for the family's comfort and fortitude during this difficult moment of mourning.
