On September 19, 2019, Rain South Africa made history by activating Africa's first 5G network, marking one of the world's first commercial 5G networks.
The launch is a significant milestone for the company, which has seen rapid growth in subscriptions since its inception in 2018 as a data-only mobile provider with no contracts.
According to Khaya Dlanga, Chief Marketing Officer, the 5G network will initially be available in select areas of Johannesburg and Tshwane, with plans to expand coverage to major metros across South Africa by the end of 2020.
Customers who opt for the ultra-fast unlimited internet package will enjoy speeds of up to R1000 per month (approximately USD68), with no installation required, as the routers are plug-and-play.
The 5G network, powered by Huawei, utilizes Wifi 6 technology, enabling users to stream high-definition videos to multiple devices instantly.
