On 18 September, North Imenti Member of Parliament Rahim Dawood proposed a pay cut for legislators serving Kenyans, citing it as a long-term solution to the country's wage bill burden.
Speaking at his constituency's CDF offices, MP Dawood emphasized the need for leaders to view their roles as a calling, rather than an opportunity for financial gain. He urged his colleagues to follow his example and forgo their monthly salaries.
As part of his proposal, MP Dawood allocated Ksh40 million for institutional development, including the construction of administration blocks. He also stressed the importance of treating leadership as a service, rather than a means to secure financial benefits or favors.
MP Dawood's proposal comes as Kenya grapples with overwhelming debt problems. By cutting legislators' pay, he believes the country can take a significant step towards addressing this issue.
