Kenya's Deaflympics Team Shines at Africa Deaflympics Championships

Kenya's Deaflympics team made a strong impression at the inaugural Africa Deaflympics Championships held at Kasarani Stadium, with several athletes showcasing their skills.

On September 17, 2019, world junior 200m record holder Beryl Wamira anchored the 200m women's team of Linet Wanjala and Ruth Awuor to the finals, with Wamira posting an impressive 24.46 seconds to win the gold medal at the 22nd Deaflympics Games in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 2013.

Wamira's semi-final win in 27.02 seconds was followed by Linet Wanjala's second-place finish in 28.02 seconds, while Ruth Awuor secured second place in her semi-final in 27.43 seconds.

Isaac Atima struck gold in men's 400m, clocking 56.4 seconds ahead of Mohammed Naseur of Algeria and Kenya's Dennis Kiprop, who settled for bronze in 59.3 seconds.

Kimetei Benjamin won gold in men's discus with a 25.80m throw, while Onyango Bernard bagged silver with a 24.97m throw.

By the end of the championships, Kenya topped the medal standings with 10 medals – four gold, two silver, and four bronze, while Nigeria trailed with two silver medals and Ethiopia stood third with silver and bronze medals.
