Manchester United will face a tough Europa League group stage opener on Thursday without Daniel James, who suffered an injury in the weekend Premier League win over Leicester City.

According to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, James, the team's leading scorer alongside Marcus Rashford, will be out of action, joining teammates Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, and Luke Shaw on the treatment table.

On Wednesday, Solskjaer revealed that James got a knock against Leicester and won't be available for the Group L game at home to FC Astana.

However, Solskjaer expressed optimism about the return of Diogo Dalot and Jesse Lingard, who are both back in training after recovering from illness and injury, respectively.

Goalkeeper Sergio Romero will start in place of David De Gea, who signed a new deal with the club until at least 2023.

"Sergio will play tomorrow for sure, he's proven to be a top keeper behind David and (we must) keep him ready for if something happens to David," Solskjaer said.

Young players Mason Greenwood and Axel Tuanzebe are set to make the starting lineup, while midfielder Fred will make his first start of the season.
