On September 18, 2019, a disturbing incident occurred at Dandora Health Centre in Nairobi, where a woman was forced to give birth outside the hospital's gate due to a Sh20 registration fee.

According to Nairobi's Health executive Mohamed Dagane, the county has launched investigations into the incident and disciplinary action will be taken against those at fault.

“Mothers are not supposed to be subjected to inhuman delivery experiences in or outside our health facilities,” Nairobi County Health executive Mohamed Dagane said.

Residents of Dandora took to the streets on Monday after the woman, identified as Mary Atieno, was allegedly turned away from the hospital and forced to give birth outside.

Atieno claimed that hospital staff told her they could not feel her baby's movements and needed her to seek urgent medical attention from the nearby Mama Lucy Hospital, but she could not make it in time.

Early this year, a similar incident occurred at Shalom Hospital in Athi River, where a woman gave birth at the hospital reception as nurses took tea.
