On September 17, 2019, Trevor Manuel, chairman of South Africa's Old Mutual, made comments that sparked controversy. He later apologized for those remarks, citing disrespect to the judge presiding over the court battle between the insurer and its fired CEO Peter Moyo.

Manuel's apology came in a statement, where he said, 'It was never my intention to show disrespect to the learned judge or his judgement.' He acknowledged that his language was 'wholly inappropriate' and expressed regret for the manner in which he expressed his disagreement with the decision.

Old Mutual is currently embroiled in a court battle with its former CEO Peter Moyo, who was fired in May 2019. The insurer has been seeking to remove Moyo as a director, citing a conflict of interest.
