On Wednesday morning, September 18, 2019, Kisumu Speaker Onyango Oloo faced a dramatic confrontation with anti-riot officers as he tried to enter the County Assembly.

His ally, Roy Samo (MCA Kajulu ward), was also caught in the melee as the officers lobbed teargas canisters, forcing passersby to scamper for safety.

The incident occurred a day after Kisumu County MCAs drafted a motion to impeach Oloo, who is facing fraud-related charges.

The MCAs sought to replace Oloo with Kisumu North MCA Elisha Oraro as acting Speaker, with Kondele ward MCA Joachim Oketch tabling a notice of motion to permanently remove Oloo as the substantive Speaker.

Oketch cited several grounds for the ouster, including recent allegations of corruption in the construction of the Lake Basin mall and Oloo's alleged violation of Assembly standing orders.
