Published on September 18, 2019, a delegation of World Bank officials has arrived in Kenya for a 7-day learning visit to the country's Early Grade reading and mathematics programmes.
The delegation's visit is part of their efforts to study how Kenya has implemented these programmes, which have been in place for the last five years.
Speaking at a session with the delegation at Jogoo House, Director General in the Ministry of Education, Elyas Abdi, highlighted the significant impact of the programmes on teaching and learning in primary education.
The Tusome Programme, funded by USAID at a cost of $53.8 million, and the Early Grade mathematics programme, funded by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), are two of the programmes being implemented in Kenya.
These programmes target 23,000 public primary schools in Nairobi and Kiambu Counties, with the aim of improving the teaching and learning of English, Kiswahili, and Mathematics in the early grades.
The delegation will visit primary schools in these counties to get firsthand information about curriculum delivery through classroom observation.
Kenya's experience with these programmes is being replicated in other countries, including Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Tanzania, Senegal, Sudan, and Mozambique.
