Published on September 18, 2019, Nairobi Governor's office has suspended two nurses from Dandora Health Centre following reports of a woman being forced to give birth outside the facility due to a Ksh.20 fee.
Maternity services are free at all county facilities, according to the Nairobi Governor's office, and no one is supposed to pay any charges.
Nairobi County Health executive Mohamed Dagane stated, 'No one is supposed to be subjected to inhuman delivery experiences in or outside our health facilities.'
He warned that administrative action will be taken against any nurse found culpable of negligence and investigations into the matter are underway.
According to Dagane, the woman delivered outside the gate due to a referral lapse, and allegations of bribery cannot be substantiated until the probe is complete.
The incident sparked protests from women in Dandora, who took to the streets to express their outrage.
This is not the first incident of its kind, as in August, a video of a woman giving birth on the floor at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital while nurses sipped tea went viral on social media.
