On June 20, 2018, two men allegedly posed as investigators from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) at Gracia Hotel in Nairobi's Kilimani area.
They later returned on June 28, 2018, and attempted to extort Ksh. 30 Million from Kilifi Governor Amason Jeffah Kingi, claiming to be EACC officers.
State Counsel Jennifer Kaniu sought orders from the court to have the suspects arrested and arraigned for plea hearing, citing their repeated deferrals of the hearing.
Senior Principal Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi issued warrants of arrest against the suspects, George Ngugi and Abdul Aziz Alim, and directed the police to arrest them by September 24, 2019.
The case will be mentioned again on that date for a pre-trial hearing.
Magistrate Mugambi criticized the defence for abusing the goodwill extended to them, as they had been given multiple opportunities to present the suspects but failed to do so.
Two other suspects, Moses Musee Maluki and Noah Akala Aduwo, have been granted cash bail of Ksh 600,000 each pending the hearing of the case.
