On September 15, 2019, Geoffrey Kamworor, a 26-year-old athlete from Kaptagat, Uasin Gichu County, shattered the World Half Marathon record in Copenhagen, finishing in 58:01 and beating Abraham Kiptum's previous mark by 17 seconds.

Trained by Olympic and world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge, Kamworor has set his sights on the New York City marathon in November, where he finished third last year, with the goal of winning the gold he won in 2017.

Despite qualifying for the Doha World Championships later this month in Qatar, Kamworor chose to skip the event, opting instead to focus on his training and prepare for the New York City marathon.

“I’m so happy, that is a milestone I have been thinking of for some time, and I thank God for giving me the energy to accomplish it. I believe the record can still be lowered further, and there are also other records in store that I’m aiming for,” Kamworor told Citizen Digital.

With his sights set on more records, Kamworor is not ruling out the possibility of breaking records outside the half marathon distance.
