Published on September 17, 2019
Chama cha ODM, led by Raila Odinga, has refunded more than KSh 2.25 million to nine ODM nomination losers in the Kibra by-election.
The move comes after allegations of malpractice during the nomination process on September 7, 2019, in the Kibra constituency.
According to a report by Standard, Raila Odinga ordered the refund after a long meeting with the nomination losers on September 10, 2019.
Each of the losers was refunded KSh 250,000, which they had paid as nomination fees on September 11, 2019.
The losers who received the refunds include Dagoretti High School Principal Peter Orero, who came second, Ben Musungu, John Otieno, Chris Odhiambo, Tony Ogola, Stephen Okello, Brian Owino, Reuben Ojijo, and Eric Obayi.
On September 16, 2019, Raila Odinga acknowledged that there were challenges during the nomination process, which was peaceful.
Through his spokesperson Dennis Onyango, Raila Odinga asked the losers to continue supporting the party.
"Mr. Odinga has acknowledged that there were challenges during the nomination process, with names of voters missing from the register but not intended to favor any candidate," a statement to the media read.
Bernard Okoth, who is also known as Imran Okoth, is facing stiff competition from Jubilee Party's McDonald Mariga and ANC's Eliud Owalo.
Earlier, TUKO.co.ke reported that Nairobi County ODM lawmakers had announced that they would support Owalo against the ODM nominee.
