On September 16, 2019, a rare sighting of a spotted baby zebra at the Maasai Mara National Reserve sent shockwaves on social media.

Photographed by tour guide Antony Tira, the zebra's unusual appearance was initially thought to be the result of paint for migration tracking purposes.

However, upon closer examination, Tira realized that the zebra had a melanin disorder, causing its distinctive dark and white spots.

The zebra, just a week old and feeble, is said to be at risk of being targeted by carnivores due to its unusual coloration.

According to Tira, the zebra's genetic abnormality has affected its pigmentation, making it stand out from the black and white striped herd.
